Lantern Festival – Merchant + Performance Programming
We aim to heal our neighborhoods in Oakland through principles of compassion, collectivism, solidarity and prefigurative activism. Through: 1) commercial and public space activation, 2) mindfulness/healing-focused events, workshops, and retreats, 3) merchant organizing + cooperative development; we aim to support working-class merchants, residents, and community members to build neighborhood resilience and economic staying power in the face of trauma, gentrification, displacement, and cultural erasure, while also building towards a more inclusive, intergenerational, and intercultural neighborhood grounded in equality (social and economic), mutual aid, compassion, community safety and solidarity.
As a foundational basis for our work, we are driven by how we can create accessible and inclusive spaces for self and community transformation – in which opportunities to gather and heal on an individual and communal level can intentionally and safely arise – while also developing and implementing equitable economic models that we want to see in the world. This intersection of restorative economics and healing justice is where we feel our work is most meaningful and impactful. Through this lens, we aim to collectively work towards building neighborhoods that are rooted in generosity, abundance, mindfulness, and care for one another.
